For international visitors the most convenient airport for Elba is Pisa Airport. Once at Pisa Airport you need to head south to the port town of Piombino from where you can catch a ferry or hydrofoil across to Elba. From Pisa Airport to Piombino takes around an hour to an hour and a half by car, depending on traffic, a distance of 107 kilometres.
The journey from Pisa Airport to Piombino is best made by car; it is possible to make the journey by public transport but it can be complicated, and requires a combination of trains and buses. |

From Piombino you have various options, including which port to sail to and which type of vessel to sail across in. The most popular route is by ferry from Piombino to Portoferraio, the island's capital, which takes an hour. You can bring cars across on the ferries but if you're a foot passenger there's also the option of taking a hydrofoil. The hydrofoils are faster than the ferries but not as frequent. You can get a full breakdown of the sea crossing in our Elba Ferry Tickets and Timetables section.
Elba does also have its own airport, located close to the town of Marina di Campo. Although it mainly looks after private flights, there are a small number of commercial routes available as well. The main company that operates the commercial flights is called Silver Air and they fly from Pisa, Florence, Milan Linate and Lugano in Switzerland in small, 16-seater aeroplanes.
Once you're in Elba, the options for getting around include buses, taxis, rental car or scooter rental. You can also hire bicycles and boats for leisure purposes.
