The Piazza del Campo in Siena is simply one of the most beautiful squares in the world. In fact, calling it a square isn't quite accurate as it's the shape of a shell which gently slopes from top to bottom.
Also known as Il Campo, the Piazza is the scene for the annual horse race in Siena known as the Palio, in which riders dressed in the colours of their part of town take on the local competition. |

This most beautiful Piazza is the focal point of the equally beautiful city of Siena in Tuscany which bristles with medieval charm. To get the best possible view of Piazza del Campo you can climb the 88 metre high Torre del Mangia, the tower protruding from the Palazzo Pubblicoat the bottom of the square. Other landmarks around the square include the Fonte Gaia, a fountain that was built in 1419.
