The Villa della Petraia is located in the Castello district on the outskirts of Florence city centre. It takes its name from the rocky ground which caused some difficulties that were encountered when producing the beautiful garden for which the villa is famed.
Originally dating back to the 14th century, the villa has changed hands between numerous noble Florentine families. |
Most notable of those families were the Medici banking clan who took possession of it in the 16th century and who can be largely accredited with its most decorative aspects. The Villa della Petraia takes its place among the numerous Medici Villas and Gardens in TuscanyUNESCO World Heritage Site which was confirmed in 2013.
