The UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Tuscany provide a beguiling combination of natural beauty and historic fascination.
There are six separate listing although the first one, the Medici Villas and Gardens of Tuscany is split between 14 separate sites which include the Boboli Gardens in Florence. Three of Tuscany's most famous towns and cities are listed for their historic centres: San Gimignano, Siena and Pienza, while the city of Pisa's listing is ascribed to its main square, the Piazza dei Miracoli with its landmark buildings of Tower, Cathedral and Baptistery. |
As a contrast to the other five UNESCO sites in Tuscany, the region's Val d'Orcia is all about rolling fields stitched together by cypress trees. The beautiful valley region earned its inscription for the way man managed to harness its unique aesthetics which now form the basis of the most iconic images of Tuscany.
The most recent addition to Tuscany's UNESCO sites was the spa town of Montecatini Terme in 2021.
