As if the wonders of the Basilica di Santa Croce and its chapels were not enough, the Museo dell'Opera di Santa Croce houses further valuable exhibits that have resisted time and misfortune, on display in rooms that used to be part of a monastery (including its refectory).
The museum has been around for more than a century but only intermittently. |

Reparations were required after a colossal flood of the river Arno in 1966 led to many pieces being damaged and the museum's closure until 1975. An additional project of restoration of the museum was carried out in 2006. Frescoes, sinopias, reliefs, sculptures and wooden furniture are part of the collection which is distributed across several rooms.
Exhibits of note include the crucifix by Cimabue (that required a complex process of restoration after the flood), the Deposition of Christ by Francesco Salviati, the Last Supper painted by Taddeo Gaddi and Bronzino’s Descent of Christ into Limbo. There are also works by Alessandro Allori, Lodovico Cardi (Cigoli), Luca della Robbia and Jacopo Ligozzi.
