Piazzale Michelangelo is a square that's situated in an elevated position, south of the River Arno in the city of Florence. Although the piazza itself is quite unremarkable, it's one of the favourite visitor attractions in the city, providing incredible panoramas.
From this position you can see the historic city sprawled out before you with Florence Cathedral and the Ponte Vecchio centre stage. |

It's possible to drive to the Piazzale Michelangelo and there is a small car park there, but as most visitors to the city won't have their own transport, there's an established walking route from the centre. The Scala del Monte alle Croci is a stairway that leads up to the Piazzale from the San Niccolò area of Florence, passing the Giardino delle Rose park along the way. From the top of the staircase you can clearly make out the historic city walls on this side of the river.
Just a short walk from the Piazzale is the beautiful Basilica di San Miniato al Monte church and it's worth the extra effort to visit, not only to explore the church itself but to enjoy some further incredible views from this slightly more elevated position. Other places of interest on this side of the river are the Forte di Belvedere, Boboli Gardens and Palazzo Pitti, all of which are within walking distance.
